DarkBrain, LLC is a pro-artist studio that only publishes creator-owned titles. This means:
- all of our titles are owned by the creator of that title
- all our artists who participate in creating our comics receive up-front payments and royalties
- 50% of our revenues go back to the artists; the rest helps us make more comics
DarkBrain was create to support and encourage creativity - and we hope you will support our and other efforts that are pro-artist and creator-owned!
DarkBrain also helps to publish other creator's work with our Partner Program.
Creator-Owned : properties where the person(s) who created it retain the rights
Use this stamp if you believe in AND support this initiative. This initiative got some wind in its sails recently with Steve Niles and Eric Powell posting blogs and videos about it.
But, also study the history of this initiative which goes back to Neal Adams and many others (see references below).
There are pros and cons to creator-owned. The largest con is that the big publishers want money, and there is a perception that more money is to be made in owning the property -
so they will generally not promote or use creator-owned properties. This is just the reality of the marketplace.
(I would argue that the big shops should consider that a GOOD creator-owned property that makes money is better than a MEDIOCRE company-owned property in the big picture -
that quality means something. And a diverse portfolio is better than a narrow one. Imagine if something like Star Wars or Twilight was offered as a creator-owned property to a
studio and they turned it down because they didn't own it and screwed themselves out of billions of lost revenue... actually, that happens all the time).
So, given the economic reality of the marketplace, for creator-owned properties to thrive, it is up to the community itself.
So use this stamp proudly if you support creator-owned projects! And then back it up by touring the artist's alley at cons, checking out unknown indy comics online, and more - it IS up to YOU!

This initiative is defined as: Pro-Artist: properties where the artist(s) involved in creating the work have a stake in the project via ownership or royalties.
To be specific, this is not just "creator-owned," another wonderful initiative. Pro-Artist is a higher standard where the artists participating, even if they did not create
the property itself, are included in the financial make-up of the project.

If we can make this successful, consider the long-term implications of artists benefiting from successful projects automatically.
